12th Annual Cowboy Carnival is May 24th

Are you looking for a family-friendly way to spend Memorial Day Sunday that promises fun for everyone and a home-cooked BBQ lunch? Then join the Hyattville community for the 12th Annual Cowboy Carnival on May 24! This family fun day is filled with horse races, live entertainment, working dog trials, horseshoes, live and silent auctions, kids’ events, and lunch in is included with your entry fee. Come and spend the day with us!  Funds raised benefit the Hyattville Community Center for the next year.

We will begin with Cowboy Church at 9 a.m. at the horse race track (air strip), followed directly by horse race registration at 10 a.m.  The popular horse races will begin between 10:30 and 11. Riders from all over the basin will compete in 220 and 440 races with jackpots. Registration is $50, and contestants can register on race day. Admission is free, and you can back your vehicle right up to the track for tailgating and a good view.  People will bid on their favorite contestants at the Calcutta. For more information contact Dave Greer at 307-469-2336.

The main gate at the Community Center and registration for the day’s other events will open at 10:30, with a $10 entry for adults, $5 for children or $25 for an immediate family. The gate fee includes a delicious BBQ lunch and is good for the rest of the day.   This is also when you can drop off pies for the Pie Contest.

Also opening at 10:30 Sunday morning will be the book sale (with an all new selection), quilt show and photo displays. Dozens of handmade quilts from all over the Big Horn Basin will be on display in the main building, and these works of art are treasures to see. Anyone interested in entering a quilt must drop it off at a designated location one week before the Carnival, where they will be returned afterward. Contact Marylou Doyle for more quilt information at 307-469-2253, and to find out more about the photo contest log on to the website listed below.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 and will include beef, lamb, pork, and home-made pies served at 2 p.m.  The Community Center Board is pleased to welcome the band Prairie Grass, sponsored by ANB Bank. They will be playing right after lunch time.

After your meal, the Chauncey McMillan Memorial  Sheep  Dog Competition is slated for 1 p.m. on the main grounds and always draws a big crowd. Competitors bring their dogs from across Wyoming and Montana, and it features two classes- one for ranch dogs who have never entered a sanctioned dog trial before, and another for dogs who have previously competed.  Entry fees are $35 per dog, and only dogs entered in the competition will be allowed on the grounds with a leash. Contact Jill Tharp at 307-469-2235 for more information.

Also at 1 p.m.  are the cribbage and horseshoe tournaments. Cribbage contestants will need to bring a board and cards for one-on-one matches. Entry fee will be $10 per person with a $100 pot and 90 percent payback. Rules will be discussed prior to the tournament.
Kids will enjoy pony rides and a petting zoo at noon, along with other fun kids’ games.  A plant/craft sale, Bingo, and silent auction will also start at noon. Children can register for the 2:30 p.m. BB Gun Shoot at the main gate (no personal guns, please).

The sharpshooter contest begins at 1:30, so you’ll have time to enjoy the races in the morning and the BBQ Lunch! It will be  at  the South end of  the airstrip (on the gravel road between Hyattville and Ten Sleep; this will be marked).  Bring your own gun and a $10.00 entry fee for 3 shots at the target in 30 seconds and at 200 hundred yards.  Smallest 3 shot grouping wins!!  50% of the Jackpot goes to the winner, and 50% of Jackpot to Hyattville Community Center.  For more information contact Jim Legge at (307) 469-2233.  This event is generously sponsored by the Ten Sleep-Hyattville Lions Club.

The afternoon will end with the live auction by Gary Nash at 4:00. The auction will feature artwork, jewelry, a lobster dinner, specialty items and more. Click here for more information about the 2015 Cowboy Carnival, including a full schedule of events, and more details on specific events.
